Just like many other forms of minority theatre, Native American theatre was brought to the limelight during the cultural revolution throughout the 1960's and 1970's. The Native American Theatre Ensemble, founded in 1972, took on the task of educating the public about the lives and issues that real Native Americans experience. Some of these issues include the idiotic internment camps, the struggle at Angel Island, and the discrimination that they face on a daily basis. The idea that many people had of Native Americans was a misrepresentation of how they actually looked and acted, and this was a major opportunity to show the true greatness of their culture. Even though it was a goal to educate the public, they also wanted to create relatable drama's for the native American community. This has led the the creation of hundreds of different pieces of literature and drama that are now circulating the country.
